We have just raced into the second decade of the 21st century. A number of economists predict, that as we recover from the worst recession in 70 years, that this is likely to be a very volatile new decade. While we can’t begin to anticipate all of the new challenges that await us we can identify a few. Tom Sine will take us on a tour of some of the new challenges that are likely to face our lives, families, churches and the lives of our poorest neighbors 2010 to 2020. He will also share a range of imaginative ways followers of Jesus are creating to be a difference and make a difference in response to these new challenges. times. Tom will particularly describe, as he does in The New Conspirators, of how God is working through a new generation of risk takers and innovators to create an array of new missional communities and congregations. In every session you will be invited to imagine new possibilities for your life, for First United Methodist of Denton and for new ways to extend God’s love to our world in this volatile new decade.
Tom Sine is a consultant in futures research and planning for both Christian and secular organizations. He works together with his wife Christine, to assist organizations to evaluate how their world, nation and communities are changing so they can adapt more adequately to face the challenges of the 21st Century. Tom also works to help Christian organizations develop a holistic theology of mission. Tom Sine speaks widely at colleges, churches, and missions conferences, and leads creativity seminars for a variety of Christian groups. He is an adjunct professor for Fuller Theological Seminary in Seattle where he teaches a course on Christian Worldview. He holds a Ph.D. in history with a minor in futures study from the University of Washington. His latest book is The New Conspirators: Creating the Future One Mustard Seed At A Time. Other books include Mustard seed vs McWorld: Reinventing Life and Faith for the Future (Baker 1999), Cease Fire: Searching for Sanity in America’s Culture Wars (Eerdmans 1995) and Live It Up! How To Create A Life You Can Love (Herald Press 1993). He also co-authored with his wife, Dr. Christine Sine, Living On Purpose: Finding God’s Best for Your Life, published in January 2002. Tom and Christine are the founders of Mustard Seed Associates, which raises awareness of issues facing Christians and churches in the future and enables people to develop creative responses.
You will be invited to discover God’s best for your life and imagine new ways God might use your mustard seed to make a difference in these volatile times
The teens, 20 and 30 year-olds are particularly invited to come learn what God is doing through their generation and to share their ideas of how to create new ways to be a difference locally and globally. All generations are invited to come and learn and imagine with these young leaders in your church.

Clergy from Denton will be invited to explore how they can join the growing missional movement in the United States. Tom Sine will share some of the creative new missional expressions and
invite clergy to imagine new ways their congregations might become more of God’s compassion in response to the growing needs in the lives of our neighbors in Denton and throughout the world in this new decade.
In this final lecture Tom will take participants on a tour of some of the major global and national challenges that he believes are likely to impact our lives and those of our neighbors in this new decade 2010 to 2020. We will also briefly look at new challenges that may impact lives of people in Denton as well as the attendance and giving patterns at First United Methodist church in the coming decade. Finally, we share a few examples of creative ways Christians and congregations are already engaging some of these new challenges. Again we will invite participants to share their ideas of creative new ways to serve God and our neighbors in rapidly changing decade.
