Director of Music and Worship

First United Methodist Church of Denton Texas, (FUMC-Denton), a church celebrating over 160 years in a college community renowned for its musical diversity and talent, is seeking a Director of Music and Worship to provide leadership to the Worship Planning team in creating and presenting meaningful worship opportunities for the congregation.


The Music and Worship ministry of FUMC-Denton features diverse worship service styles and engages talented professionals and laypersons in a broad range of music including classical, gospel, jazz, and modern Contemporary Christian genres. The Director supervises, directly or indirectly, all choirs (adult, youth, children), handbell choirs, and the praise and worship bands. 




  • Bachelor’s degree in music (preferably with choral conducting emphasis) required; Master’s degree in music preferred

  • Significant experience in directing volunteer choral ensembles 

  • Significant experience in planning and leading traditional worship        

  • Keyboard skills in multiple musical genres desired, with sufficient keyboard (piano) skills to effectively lead rehearsals

  • Skill at choral and instrumental music composition and arranging

  • Demonstrable recruitment skills

  • Broad historical knowledge of sacred choral music

  • Fluency in Finale or Sibelius, MS Office, multi-media worship and other software 

  • Knowledge of church audio and video technology systems

  • Competence in music diction (esp. Latin, German, French, Spanish)


Duties and responsibilities:


In collaboration with the Worship Planning team, plan, coordinate, and implement the overall vision of the music and worship ministries of the congregation. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Lead the worship planning team in weekly meetings, to plan services for the congregation.

  • Maintain an annual schedule of worship participation for all performing ensembles and AV technicians.

  • Conduct the adult Chancel Choir, Men’s Ensemble, and Chamber Singers; recruiting new participants. Supervise the maintenance of membership databases and care of choir robes.

  • Schedule concerts and events that build an atmosphere of teamwork including fundraising events, presentation of major choral masterpieces, production of theatrical events and social activities.

  • Supervise the organist, children’s choir director, youth choir director, handbell director, jazz service worship leader, adult choir section leaders, music librarian, and AV technicians. Supervise the Director of the church’s Fine Arts Academy and serve on its advisory board. Coordinate with each of these leaders in planning an annual schedule of worship participation.

  • Supervise maintenance and expansion of music library, ensuring full compliance with copyright law.

  • Formulate and maintain the Music and Worship ministry budgets. Oversee payroll for professional musicians and AV technicians. 

  • Lead the Ford-Marcy Foundation committee and other endowment fund sources in the planning, implementation, and accounting of the expenditure of annual distributions from those musical endowments. 

  • Hire additional musicians and AV technicians as needed for Sunday services, high holiday services, memorial services, and weddings including submission of required paperwork to the Business Administrator.

  • Coordinate with the Director of Marketing and Communications to produce media presentation materials for traditional and jazz worship, including weekly bulletins for those services. Maintain and supplement the associated database of hymns, worship songs and video loops used in worship.

  • Oversee operation and maintenance of AV systems in the Sanctuary, Monroe worship space and Cole Chapel. 

  • Oversee maintenance of principal musical instruments, including the Sanctuary pipe organ, concert grand piano and other pianos, organs, and drum kits elsewhere on the campus.

  • Maintain an open, positive relationship with the faculty and administration of the College of Music at the University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University, actively seeking collaborative projects with both entities.

  • Demonstrate a willingness to create new performing groups from within the congregation as warranted.

Director of Youth Ministry/ Associate Pastor of Youth


First United Methodist of Denton (FUMC) is seeking a Director of Youth Ministry or an Associate Pastor of Youth to oversee and provide leadership in developing and implementing youth ministry programming that encourages faith formation and spiritual development in the lives of 6th - 12th grade students.  


The Director of Youth Ministry must be an enthusiastic person who has a passion for leading youth to become disciples of Jesus Christ.  The youth program at FUMC is dynamic and growing, with numbers upwards of 75 active youth involved in Youth Council, worship, missions, year-round retreats, Sunday School, and Sunday and Wednesday evening programs.  FUMC youth are committed to including all people, sharing God’s love, learning, worshiping, praying, singing and playing together, and reaching out to those in need.

Bachelor’s degree required

  • Significant experience working with youth – including diverse and special needs students and their families

  • Must be able to demonstrate the ability to plan, develop, coordinate, manage and implement a youth ministry program

  • Pastoral counseling experience highly desirable

  • Ability to relate well and develop strong relationships with youth and their families

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, relationship and conflict management skills, be highly flexible, and have the ability to work as a member of a team

  • Must have a skill set that includes a wide variety of recruiting strategies effective with youth and adult volunteers

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Proficiency in multiple methods of media communication including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite and social media platforms




Duties and responsibilities:


1.  Collaborate with clergy, staff, and laity to carry out the church’s mission, vision, and ministry particularly as it relates to youth and their families


2.  Participate in weekly staff and worship planning team meetings as a representative of the youth program, and to ensure the inclusion of youth in the worship life of the congregation


3.  Cultivate and communicate the value of the youth ministry program to the church and the community


4.  Develop and administer all budgets related to youth programming and staffing – including discretionary funds


5.  Recruit and supervise youth staff, adult youth counselors, youth Sunday School teachers, and other youth volunteers while offering support, training, and retention


6.  Oversee publication of all activities for youth (including District and Conference) events as appropriate


7.  Work with Conference staff to write curriculum and direct youth camps and Bible retreats


8.  Select, obtain, and create curriculum for Sunday School youth programs, including the Confirmation program, and adapting programming for special needs students


9.  Direct special programs and events – human sexuality seminars, mission trips, retreats, etc.


10.  Coordinate the youth program with the Credo Youth Choir, and with Council on Ministries to include youth volunteers in major church events


11.  Additional duties will be assigned for clergy - assist in worship leadership, liturgy, preaching, and administering the sacraments

Preschool-Childcare Teacher 

Children’s Day Out of First United Methodist Church has classroom teacher openings. We are a weekday preschool/daycare open from 7 am to 6 pm. We serve children from six weeks of age through pre-K (four and five years old).

Early childhood experience or training is preferred but not necessary. Applicants must pass a background check, be FBI fingerprinted, and be current or take Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED before working in a classroom. Applicants must have graduated from High School or have a GED.

We do offer an option of days and hours worked per week.
